Overgrowth Desktop Wallpapers

Heya guys,

I haven't had much to show lately, I'm mostly working on Fixing the Content pack file-paths for the next alpha and stuff that will be in future updates of matt1990's awesome content downloader, but today while testing out some Photoshop actions I made for that, I ended up making this:

Image

Desktop wallpapers are a great way to show your support for a game to anyone that might look at your screen, and even just to get yourself psyched up for when the game finally does comes out. Here are some examples:
Halo 3: Finish the fight, Starcraft 2, Assassin's Creed, Half life 2 - episode 1, Fallout 3.
You can find tons of wallpapers for all kinds of games via google or on sites like this.
Note: I just looked up the first wallpapers that came to mind, no need to argue which of these might be better or worse, and if you want to discuss which you like best, please do so in another topic. This is about Wolfire/Overgrowth Desktops.

I've asked the devs before if they could put up some of Aubrey's awesome concept work as nice, high quality Desktop wallpapers, but understandably for now they want to keep working on the actual engine and content. I'm certain that eventually, once they have more to show, there will definitely be more stuff on the OG site for unsuspecting newcomers and hardcore fans alike to to gawk and drool at, but until then it's up to us.

And so here is my call to action:
I ask of you, the elite SPF community, to make some awesome Desktop Wallpapers. It can be anything as long as it's OG or at least Wolfire related. You can use in-game shots, Concept art, frames from development movies made so far, or if you can manage, even make your own art. Ideally the final result should contain the word 'overgrowth' somewhere, but that can just be the logo in a corner like with mine.

The resolution needs to be at least 1024x768pixels in size, preferably larger.
Anything over 2000 pixels in either dimension is probably on the upper end.
Check here for a nice illustration of common resolutions, and their respective aspect ratios. Feel free to upload multiple versions for different resolutions (I probably will later as well)

It does not matter what program you use. I would advise Photoshop, or the gimp for those who prefer open source and free, but really even just MS Paint is fine. I've seen some -excellent- stuff done just in Paint before.

Here are some resources to get you started:
Official Wolfire and Overgrowth Logos
Compilation of Concept art
Concept art on Flickr and Facebook
HD Wolfire Videos
Imageshack for uploading images, since the forum's file uploader bugs out on large images. Once uploaded just copy the 'Direct Link' and paste it in like this:

Code: Select all

And Some things I made:

A non-shaded white photobox to take pixtures inside of in OG. (link coming up)

Whaleman Silhouette:
Whaleman.zip
(116.54 KiB) Downloaded 65 times
Bloom Photoshop actions:
Bloom.zip
(2.54 KiB) Downloaded 56 times

Let's see what you guys can come up with.
I will probably make some more as time goes on as well.

Great idea. I'm useless at photoshop though so I'll just wait and see what other people make :)

I brought this up awhile back. I'm glad someone else has had the same feelings. I also just really like having a nice desktop background ... Maybe I'm just weird ...

Here's the Wolfire desktop I've been using (1680 x 1050)

Not necessarily Overgrowth, but you get the idea. Not necessarily fancy either.

MightyWarriorEX, nah it's not weird at all. Having a desktop wallpaper is like putting pictures and posters on your walls in your home. It makes it much less bland and boring :)

Richie Rabbit, Heh, if they decide to give him ears in future alphas then I might redo this.

Ozymandias, very cool. Nice and simple =)

My Og background. I know colors kind of burn eyes. I'll make a dark version a little later. Image

Nice dude, Interesting Demon-esque Whaleman there XD

The colors are kinda cool too. You could try doing this in various colors, that might be nice.

Working on another one. Will have it up by Sunday. Oh, Jo, care to release the OG font that will really help me with some other wallpapers I'm making.

OG font? if you mean the Overgrowth Logo, It's in the Logo pack I linked, and it's not a font (yet as far as I know) just an image.

I played around with the Whaleman model from here viewtopic.php?f=13&t=4810 (thx OpethRockr55)and came up with this:
Whaleman wallpaper
Whaleman wallpaper
This is preliminary, maybe I will find the time to figure out how to get the normal map and some decent textures into my rendering program. And my long time plan is water and a boat, but maybe I'll wait till there is a rabbit model. Feel free to edit this, if you want to ... the fonts may be not really optimal.
