About the monoliths...

Post by Poonhat » Mon Jan 18, 2010 7:15 pm

So these monoliths;
Any chance they are remains of human civilization, and this is all some freaky By The Waters of Babylon stuff with animal people? Maybe I missed something and this has already been stated or dis-proven. Guess I'm not sure;
Either way, i'm totally excited for this damned game.

The ruins are ruins, the dev team never specified what they were. And we are all excited for this game ;)

Well, the chances are pretty high. And it was mentioned somewhere that Overgrowth is set in a future earth. But I don't think that scenario is too rigid or will get too important for the story. See this blog post for some more concept art that has steel-enforced concrete:

My hypothesis is this is the home planet of the combine and the ruins were "practice" citadels.

They had to start somewhere and if we can have giant woodland animals doing kung fu, giant telekinetic slugs are really just one or two steps beyond that.

They are ruins of the ancient Whaleman civilization, before they took to the sea, abandoning the land forever.

Alternatively, it's an aesthetic that extended from Lugaru's maps having primitives strewn about the landscape.

Humans are boring.

That said, I hope the origin of the ruins gets left ambiguous. It's more fun that way, because then we all get to wonder, and I still get to say that they're not human ruins and nobody can prove me wrong.

I agree with XerxesQ. Keep it ambiguous.

A couple of very vague suggestions that the monoliths are of human origin would be okay. But clearly spelling it out or using it as a major plot point would just highlight how silly it is.

Well, humans are kinda not really in the game much. it's as if humans never existed. i think theis was cleared up by Jeff on a thread, though i'm not sure.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they spelled that out somewhere.

Leave them ambiguous, but leave hints in the ruins to the mystery of the Whaleman (ala Portal's secret rooms).

I'd love to back myself into a cave, fending off attackers, and see hastily scribbled cave drawings of a large figure stomping rabbits. :P

It should be noted that I totally freaked out when I read the title of this thread because I almost thought some weird glitch happened and I was looking at topics from the LOVE forums on Wolfire's forums. :lol:

Anyways, yeah, I think it has something to do with destroyed human civilization...we need a Lugaru 1 and a half. HUMAPOCALYPSE!!! :twisted:

And then have humans come through a portals, saying:
"We come in-"
*stabs*
*falls on the ground*

And then rabbits, cats, dogs, rats, and wolves then huddle around this dead body, poking it with sticks.

And then the other animals shoved the body down the wolf's mouth.

Nope, nothing to see here. No *humans*...
