3rd person and underground don't mix well

Who said it was needed as such?
There's plenty more ways to do it, if you want digging moles:
a) Just turn first-person for the underground bit.
b)
Only go underground for a degree, and at this point only having controls for lateral movement, and leave the camera above ground.

Also maybe implement vague camera movement and no clear point of reference of your location to add the advantages explained in (c).
c) Simply go blind while digging: it would be a lot harder to calculate where you'd pop out of the ground, thus nerfing the ability considerably to prevent it being over-used and over-powered.
d) Think of something!
